January 4, 2019 – Daryl Dragon

We’re ending the week on a sad note. This week, we lost another Legend, Daryl Dragon – better known as “Captain” from Captain & Tennille. Dargon’s nickname came from his time playing keyboard for the Beach Boys. Beach Boy Mike Love called him “Captain Keyboard” on stage one night, and the nickname stuck. Dragon met his future wife, Toni Tennille in 1971. He was between tours with the Beach Boys at the time, and auditioned to play keyboards in a musical Tennille had co-written. He landed the gig, and later reciprocated by recommending Tennille to the Beach Boys when they were in need of an additional keyboardist. She toured with them for a year – the one and only “Beach Girl”. After the tour was over, the pair began collaborating and performing in the Los Angeles area. They were eventually signed to A&M Records, and released their smash hit “Love Will Keep Us Together” in 1975. The song would go on to win the 1975 Grammy Award for Record of the Year. Captain and Tennille had their own variety show on ABC from 1976-1977. In 2010, it was announced that Dragon had developed a neurological condition that caused him to have tremors, which unfortunately was debilitating to Dragon’s abilities as a musician. Tennille and Dragon divorced in July 2014, after 39 years of marriage. They remained close friends, and Tennille was by his side when he passed away from renal failure on January 2.
