Today would have been Bob Marley’s 74th birthday! He grew up in Kingston Jamaica listening to the latest R&B from American radio stations whose broadcasts reached the island. In 1963 he formed a group with his friends, which eventually became the Wailers. After the band broke up in 1974, and after an assassination attempt that wounded him, his wife and his manager, Marley left Jamaica and moved to England. It was here that he recorded and released his album Exodus, which established his worldwide reputation and elevated his status as one of the world’s best selling artists of all time. In 1999, Time Magazine named Exodus Album of the Century. Bob Marley died May 11, 1981 at the age of 36, due to the spread of melanoma to his brain and lungs. He received a full state funeral in Jamaica, and was buried near his birthplace, with his guitar. His influence and popularity live on – last year, Forbes Magazine listed Marley as 5th on their list of the highest earning dead celebrities.
