It was no surprise that the little girl who was fascinated with the ‘magic music box” would go on to a career in broadcasting.
“My parents are so cool. They liked every kind of popular music and regularly bought 45’s and albums home. My dad, now 72, even likes Adam Lambert.”
They also listened to heritage radio station WABC all day in their shop in the Garment industry section of Manhattan all day and in the car. That’s where I first heard the greats. Dan Ingram, Harry Harrison, Ron Lundy and others were just having so much fun and the music was so great, I always wanted to be around a radio. The first birthday present I ever really asked for was a radio. It was one of those green colored round ones with AM only and a cool chain attached so I could swing it around. I spent my summers growing up in the shop, with the sounds of the city coming up thru the windows (we were on the 8th floor), and listening to all those wonderful hall-of-fame disc jockey’s radio while I did work for my parents.
Alicia graduated from CanarsieHigh School and went on to a Mass Media degree at KingsboroughCommunity College in Brooklyn. “All our professors had ties in Manhattan to most every TV and radio stations. The field trips were incredible, including one great afternoon seminar with Don Imus”.
After Kingsborough, Alicia migrated to GeneseoState, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting. On to WBTA in Attica (where she started working weekends as a college junior), to WPXY here in Rochester to do weekends. I was also on Rochester’s Home Shopping Channel as one of the hosts. But radio is my first love! I finally landed my first full time gig at WMJQ (Magic 92) November 1, 1985. WMJQ became WBEE and I was there 13 years total. A short stint at WRMM and 3 at the old WVOR not to mention 2.5 years as Operations Manager and afternoon personality at Big Dog 103 5, WUUF. After a 6 year hiatus from radio, Alicia is beyond delighted to be stacking up the hits at Legends 102.7.
