February 10, 2022 – Miami Vice

It’s Throwback Thursday, and today we’re spotlighting the year 1984. That’s the year that Miami Vice premiered on NBC! It aired for 5 seasons, and starred Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Rico Tubbs as Metro-Dade Police Department detectives. The show was heavily influenced by New Wave culture, especially its music and fashion. While most other TV shows would use music that was made for TV, Miami Vice spent $10,000 or more per episode to buy the rights to original recordings of some of the decade’s biggest songs. It’s no surprise then that the show was one of the most expensive to make at the time – it cost an average of $1.3 million per episode! Because of it’s massive popularity, the show had a positive impact on the city of Miami, boosting both tourism and investment. Learn more here.
