Happy National Pizza Day! Foods similar to pizza have been around a long time – since the Neolithic age! But our modern pizza evolved from similar flatbread dishes created in Naples, Italy in the 18th or early 19th centuries. Pizza was brought to the U.S. by Italian immigrants and first appeared in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Trenton, and St. Louis. Pizza was mostly eaten by Italian immigrants and their descendants until after World War II, when returning veterans who had been introduced to Italy’s cuisine helped popularize it. Today, it’s estimated that 13% of the U.S. population over the age of 2 eats pizza on any given day! Learn more here.
