60 years ago today, Marvel Comics introduced the Hulk in the first issue of The Incredible Hulk! The Hulk was created by Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, inspired by a mashup of Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Initially, Lee chose grey for the Hulk. But the printer had an issue getting a consistent coloring in the issue. So Lee decided to change his skin color to green instead.
The Hulk’s original comic book series was cancelled after just 6 issues, but he guest-starred in The Fantastic Four and later became a founding member of the Avengers. The character has been adapted in live action, animated, and video game incarnations. The character was first brought to life in the 1978 TV series The Incredible Hulk, played by Lou Ferrigno and Bill Bixby. Arnold Schwarzenegger auditioned for the part, but was turned down because of his inadequate height!
