There was some sad news over the weekend – Irene Cara died on Friday at the age of 63. She was best known for starring in Fame in 1980, along with singing its theme song, which was a huge hit. Originally, she was cast as a dancer, but once the producers heard her voice, they rewrote the part of Coco Hernandez for her. The soundtrack went on to go multiplatinum, and “Fame” won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. She’s also known for singing the title song for the movie Flashdance, which she co-wrote while she was on the way to the studio to record it! She won another Oscar for the song in 1984. Cara died at her home in Florida, the cause of her death was unknown. Learn more here.
