Happy National Cotton Candy Day! Spun sugar has been around for centuries, but machine-spun cotton candy wasn’t invented until 1897. It was invented by a dentist, of all people! It was introduced at the World’s Fair in 1904 and was a huge success. They sold more than 68,655 boxes of “fairy floss” at 25 cents apiece. Another dentist from Louisiana invented a similar cotton candy machine in 1921. His patent named the confection “Cotton Candy”, which stuck and eventually overtook the name “fairy floss”. Believe it or not, cotton candy is healthier than most desserts. Since it’s only made with sugar, there’s no fat content. There’s much more sugar in a 12-ounce soda than in an average cone of cotton candy. Learn more here.
