It’s another theme week on the Wiki Corner this week! Last week our theme week was all about Christmas songs. This week, it’s a Christmas theme week! We’re kicking off our theme week with a very seasonal decoration – Poinsettias! Poinsettias are native to Mexico and Central America. They’re named after a guy named Joel Roberts Poinsett, who was the first U.S. Minister to Mexico and the first person to introduce the plant to the U.S. The reason poinsettias are associated so strongly with the Christmas season is because of some genius marketing by the Ecke family, whose family business supplied 90% of the poinsettias sold throughout most of the 20th century. Paul Ecke Jr. sent free plants to TV stations all over the country for them to display between Thanksgiving and Christmas. He also appeared on shows like The Tonight Show to promote his plants. And contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are not toxic to kids or pets! Learn more here.
