This is the 2nd day of our theme week on Things We Learned in 2022! In May of last year, we learned that the iconic DeLorean is coming back! However, it won’t look like the original from the 80s. This one will be electric, but will still have the louvered rear window and gullwing doors. The first concept car was unveiled in August, with production expected to start in 2024.
The original DeLorean was only manufactured and marketed from 1981 until 1983, and was the only car produced by the DeLorean Motor Company. When it was released in 1981, the DeLorean had a base MSRP of $25,000, which is equivalent to over $80,000 today. Only around 9,000 were produced before the company filed for bankruptcy.
The DeLorean was immortalized in the Back to the Future movies. 6 DeLorean’s were used during filming, including 3 purchased from a collector. Only 3 of the 6 still exist. 2 are owned by Universal Studios, and one was bought at auction in 2011 for just over $541,000. As of 2015, there were an estimated 6,500 DeLorean’s still on the road, and just over 100 are known to be converted to Back to the Future time machines. Learn more here.
