Something you may not know about me is that I love award shows. I watch them all! So I’m really excited because the Golden Globe Awards are tonight! They’ve been given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association since 1944. Back then, they only gave awards for movies. The first award for television was handed out 1956, but permanent television award categories (Best TV Series, Best TV Actor, Best TV Actress) debuted in 1962. Since 1963, the award trophies have been handed out by “Miss Golden Globe”, usually the daughters or sons of celebrities. It’s since been renamed to “Golden Globe Ambassador”. Some former Miss Golden Globes became famous actors in their own right, including Melanie Griffith, her daughter Dakota Johnson, and Laura Dern. Meryl Streep has the record for most competitive wins, with 8 total. Alan Alda, Angela Lansbury, Shirley MacLaine, and Jack Nicholson all have 6. Barbara Streisand has the record for most Golden Globes earned by an individual with 10, which includes competitive and honorary categories. Learn more here.
