Happy Throwback Thursday! Today our throwback year is 1988, the year Lunchables were introduced! Lunchables were created by Oscar Meyer as a way to sell more bologna and other lunch meats. After doing a focus group with American mothers, they found that their primary concern was time (shocker). Working moms, especially, were pressed for time in the morning, trying to feed their kid’s breakfast, get them out the door to school, and also pack them a lunch. So they came up with the idea to create a prepackaged lunch with Oscar Meyer’s lunch meat. They decided to use crackers instead of bread since they would last longer and travel better and designed the package to look like a TV dinner. Other names considered include On-Trays, Crackerwiches, Mini Meals, and Fun Mealz. Lunchables were an instant hit, making $317 million their first year on sale. Today, they rake in $1 billion in sales every year. Learn more here.
