May 4, 2023 – Theme Week Day 4

We’re on the 4th day of our Odd Jobs that Don’t Exist Anymore theme week. Today, we’re talking about clock keepers. These people were employed mostly during the Middle Ages in Europe, and it was their job to maintain clocks and ensure their accuracy. They were usually paid pretty well for their services since they needed to have an understanding of math and numbers, and this was a time when there wasn’t widespread education. Initially, the job required ringing a large bell several times a day, but after the mechanical clock was invented, winding and upkeep of city clocks became necessary. As clocks became more accurate and with advances in technology, the job eventually became obsolete. Learn more here.
