Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club 5/21/23

Ed Smith interviewed Stephanie Beikirch, Honorary Chair- Heroes Ball and John Salter, Heroes Ball Event Chair. This is an annual fundraising event to support Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club.
-Stephanie talked about how she got involved Cancer Support Community and how her late father would have benefited from the serves they offer when he was dealing with cancer.
-She talked about the Veteran Support Program that Cancer Support Community offers and how unique it is, one of the only programs in NYS for veterans dealing with cancer. She explained how it supports the veteran and their family.
-John talked about how he has had a few family members and friends diagnosed with cancer and how he wanted to give back to the community which is why he decided to be on the board of Cancer Support Community.
-John and Stephanie described the upcoming Heroes Ball event and that the whole idea was to recognize local heroes in our community that demonstrate acts of compassion and generosity.
-The event will highlight the impact that those individuals have in helping people fight cancer.
-Stephanie will be accepting an award on her father’s behalf (Gary Beikirch- local medal of honor recipient)
-John talked about how they have partnered with the University of Rochester-Wilmot Cancer Institute to help people in need and how that organization has been referring families to Cancer Support Community.
-They talked about how individuals can get involved by buying a ticket or purchasing an item with the silent auction.
-They are still looking for sponsors from local businesses and organizations.
-All of the money raised stays local so that Cancer Support Community can continue to offer social and emotional support programs at no cost.
