Ed Smith interviewed James Love, the Chief Executive Officer for Cancer Support Community in Rochester.
-James talked about the mission of the organization, talking about the social and emotional support programs they provide to adults, teens and children impacted by any type of cancer.
-He also talked about how they provide programs and support for family members and caregivers of people dealing with cancer.
-James explained that they now offer programs designed specially for veterans in our community. They are one of the only organizations outside of New York City providing a veteran cancer support program.
-The idea is to fill the gap in services not provided for military veterans coping with cancer, the program is led by a veteran who is a cancer survivor.
-They provide all of these programs at no cost thanks to support from local businesses, individuals and grants. They also do fundraising events.
-James talked about their upcoming fundraising event called Comics Against Cancer. This comedy show is a partnership with a local veterans organization who provides the comedians. They are veterans that use it as a way of therapy for PTSD.
-James encouraged people to join them for the event.
-He said they do have a need for more volunteers who want to help the organization.
-He also encouraged people with a special skill that want to offer a class to cancer patients to contact them. He gave examples of community members that teach people how to play guitar or create art.
