Ed Smith spoke with Dr. Bruce Ingersoll and D. Brenda Buck. They are working on forming a nonprofit organization called Rochester Emergency Vet Services. This would provide night and weekend emergency vet support for people with pets in our area. This came about after the 24/7 emergency vet office closed in Rochester.
-Dr. Ingersoll explained this is being modeled after a nonprofit emergency vet organization in Boston and New York City.
-He explained they are in the process of applying for a 501c3 and trying to recruit veterinarians, veterinarian technicians and other professionals needed to provide the emergency services
-Dr. Buck said the facility is going to be in downtown Rochester, inside a building she owns with her own separate animal care practice.
-They talked about a shortage of veterinarians in our area and nationwide
-They talked about some of the reasons for the shortage; people retiring and an increase in the pet population
-Dr. Buck said veterinarians and techs are able to work for multiple organizations, in most cases if they wish. They are open to people working for them and other organizations.
-They explained that they are currently accepting donations via their website and have seen a huge outpouring of support from the community
-They plan on opening the facility by February 2024
