Happy Throwback Thursday! Today we’re throwing it back to 1973, the year The $10,000 Pyramid debuted! The original show spawned 7 subsequent series, each with a higher top prize. In the game, 2 contestants are paired with a celebrity, and they have to try to identify words or phrases through clues given by their teammates. The various Pyramid series have won 9 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show, which is second only to Jeopardy!
Dick Clark is the host most commonly associated with the show. He hosted the show from its beginning through 1988. The first celebrities on the show were Rob Reiner and June Lockhart, and Reiner became the first to win his partner $10,000. Billy Crystal has the record for the shortest time to get to the top of the pyramid, which he did in just 26 seconds! Actor Tom Poston (best known for his role in Newhart) has a less than stellar record – when he appeared on the show in 1986, he was unable to answer a single category in the Winners Circle, winning his partner exactly $0.
The current incarnation of the show is The $100,000 Pyramid, hosted by Michael Strahan, and is currently in its 6th season. Learn more here.
