April 6, 2024 – Theme Week Day 5

We’ve come to the end of our 5 Trivia Tidbits theme week. We started the week learning about an animal and we’re going to end the week talking about an animal – sloths! They’re one of the slowest creatures on earth, but they are surprisingly good swimmers! In the water, they can move about 3 times as fast as they can on land, using their long arms to paddle. Not only that, but they can reduce their metabolism and slow their heart rate enough to hold their breath underwater for up to 40 minutes! Sloths spend most of their time hanging upside down in the trees of the rainforests in South America and Central America. 90% of their time is spent motionless, and they sleep for around 15 hours a day. There are a few reasons why they move so slowly – their diet of leaves isn’t very nutritious, so they have to conserve as much energy as possible. It also helps them go unnoticed by predators like jaguars, ocelots, and eagles. Learn more here.
