April 12, 2024 – Turkey Vultures

This week, thousands of turkey vultures have been spotted flying over Monroe County. The reason is that they’re in the middle of their spring migration, returning to our area from their wintering sites down south. Turkey vultures are the most widespread New World vulture, with the global population estimated to be 18 million. They’re scavengers and feed almost exclusively on dead animals. They forage by smell, which is pretty uncommon for birds, and they often fly low to the ground to pick up on the scents of dead animals. Turkey vultures play an important role in the ecosystem by disposing of carrion, which would otherwise be a breeding ground for disease. They’re legally protected under the Migratory Bird Act of 1918, and it’s illegal to take, kill, or possess turkey vulture, their eggs, and any body parts including feathers. Violators could be subject to fines up to $100,000 and/or a 1-year prison term. Learn more here.
