Cicada-geddon is coming to some parts of the country this spring! This year, 2 different broods of periodical cicadas, one with a 13-year life cycle and one with a 17-year life cycle, are emerging at the same time for the first time since 1803. There will be trillions of cicadas emerging from underground across 17 states in the Southeastern and Midwestern U.S. The next time this will happen won’t be until 2245! Periodical Cicadas have the longest life cycle of any insect and spend 99.5% of their life underground, surviving by feeding on fluids from tree roots. They emerge once the soil at 8″ deep is above 64 degrees. Then they molt, mate, lay eggs, and die, all in a span of 4 to 6 weeks. The males’ recognizable high-pitched buzz is their mating song, and it can reach up to 100 decibels, about the same as a motorcycle or jackhammer! Learn more here.
