The first vinyl record was introduced by Colombia Records in 1948. Before this, records were made of an abrasive and noisy shellac material and contained less than five minutes of music per side. The new LPs were made of PVC and could be played at a speed of 33 1/3 rpm, increasing the playing time to about 22 minutes per side. Vinyl records have seen a resurgence in recent years. In 2022, vinyl records outsold CDs for the first time since 1987! Learn more here.
