May 17, 2024 – The Mirage

The Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is closing in July after more than 3 decades on the Vegas Strip. The property will undergo a 3-year renovation project and reopen in 2027 as the Hard Rock Las Vegas, complete with a soaring 700-foot-tall hotel tower shaped like a guitar. Developer Steve Wynn bought the future land of the Mirage in 1986. It was the first new resort to be built on the Strip in 16 years. When it opened in 1989, it was the world’s most expensive resort, completed for $630 million. With just over 3,000 rooms, it was also among the world’s largest hotels. The Mirage was Vegas’ first megaresort, and inspired a building boom in the 90s for other large resorts on the Strip. The signature attraction at The Mirage was an erupting giant volcano that provided free entertainment for pedestrians. The casino was also home to Siegfried & Roy’s magic show, which wa performed there for nearly 14 years. Cirque du Soleil also performed its first Vegas show at The Mirage starting in 1992.
