Actor Donald Sutherland died yesterday at the age of 88 following a “long illness”. His prolific career spanned over 7 decades and included nearly 150 film credits and more than 40 television roles. Though he won numerous awards, he never received an Academy Award nomination! He was, however, given an Academy Honorary Award in 2017.
He rose to fame in the 1960s, after starring in movies like The Dirty Dozen, M*A*S*H, and Kelly’s Heroes. He found himself a leading man throughout the 1970s, and appeared in films as varied as Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Animal House. More recently, he was known for playing President Snow, the main antagonist in The Hunger Games movies. His final on-screen role was as the no-nonsense judge Issac Parker in the 2023 miniseries “Lawmen: Bass Reeves”.
He was married 3 times and had 5 children, including actor Kiefer Sutherland, who announced his father’s death on X yesterday. Sutherland’s memoir, “Made Up, but Still True” is due to be published in November.
