Actor Jay North, best known for playing Dennis the Menace in the CBS sitcom that aired from 1959-1963, passed away yesterday at the age of 73 after a long battle with colorectal cancer. The show was a huge hit with audiences and North quickly became a household name. He also appeared as Dennis in commercials for the show’s sponsors, including Kellogg’s cereal, Best Foods mayonnaise, Skippy peanut butter, and Bosco chocolate milk, and traveled around the country on weekends to promote the show. After the show ended in 1963, North found himself typecast and had a difficult time re-establishing himself in Hollywood. After marrying his 3rd wife in 1993, North moved from Hollywood for good, settling in Lake Butler, Florida. There, he became a correctional officer and reportedly worked with troubled youth within Florida’s juvenile justice system. He also worked with an organization called A Minor Consideration, which helps former and current child stars cope with the pressures and difficulties of Hollywood. Learn more in the audio below!
