Happy Throwback Thursday! Today our throwback year is 1980, the year Caddyshack came out! It was the first movie Harold Ramis directed, and stars Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield (his first major feature film), Ted Knight (his final film role), and Michael O’Keefe. The movie was somewhat autobiographical, inspired by writer and co-star Brian Doyle-Murray’s memories of working as a caddie at a golf course outside Chicago as a teen. Ramis and Doyle-Murray’s brothers (who were also involved with the film) had also worked as caddies as teens. Many of the characters were based on people they had encountered through their various experiences. The golf scenes were shot at the Rolling Hills Golf Club in Davie, Florida. Ramis chose that location because it didn’t have any palm trees and he wanted it to look like it was in the Midwest. When Caddyshack was released on July 25, 1980, it was met with underwhelming reviews. But it has since gained a cult following and ESPN called it “perhaps the funniest sports movie ever made”.
