On this day in 1968, the musical Hair premiered on Broadway! It was the first rock musical, breaking new ground for its music, using a racially integrated cast, and inviting the audience onstage for a “Be-In” at the end of the show. At the time of its debut, the other musicals on Broadway were Hello, Dolly!, Man of La Mancha, Funny Girl, and Fiddler on the Roof. Most of those had around 6 to 10 songs per act, while Hair’s score has more than 30. The show was a huge commercial music success, with the original Broadway cast recording selling close to 3 million copies in the U.S. It stayed at number 1 on the Billboard chart for 13 weeks in 1969. The original production ran for 1,750 performances, with simultaneous productions in the U.S. and Europe following shortly thereafter. A feature film adaptation was released in 1979, and a Broadway revival opened in 2009, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Learn more in the audio below.
