We’re continuing our theme week on 5 Things You Didn’t Know Were Named After People! Today we’re talking about the city of Sedona, Arizona! It was named after an early pioneer, Sedona Schnebly, whose husband was the city’s first postmaster. She was born in Missouri, and her mother claimed to have made the name up because “it sounded pretty”. Sedona and her husband, T.C., moved their family to Arizona in 1901. They built a 2-story house, which served as a residence for visitors, and Sedona was noted for her hospitality and industriousness. The Schnebly’s believed the fast-growing community needed a post office, and T.C. wanted to be its first post master. So he wrote to the Post Master General, suggesting “Oak Creek Crossing” and “Schnebly Station,” but both were rejected for being too long. So T.C.’s brother suggested he submit “Sedona” and it was approved in 1902. Today, more than 4 million visit the area every year. Learn more in the audio below!
