Happy 100th Birthday, Yogi Berra! He’s widely regarded as one of the greatest catchers in baseball history, and later took on the roles of manager and coach. He was an 18-time All-Star, and won 10 World Series Championships as a play – more than anyone else in MLB history! He’s also one of only 6 players to win the AL MVP Award 3 times. He signed with New York Yankees in 1943 before serving in the U.S. Navy as a gunners mate in the Normandy landings during WWII. He made his major league debut at 21 in 1946, and was a mainstay in the Yankee lineup during their championship years from 1949 – 1962. The team retired his number 8 in 1972 and gave him a plaque in Monument Park in 1988. Berra died in his sleep at the age of 90 in 2015. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which was accepted on his behalf by his family. Berra was known for his “Yogi-isms”, like “It’s deja vu all over again”, “When you come to the fork in the road, take it”, and “It ain’t over til it’s over”. Learn more in the audio below.
