We’re entering the second week of the Cannes Film Festival. It’s the most prestigious film festival in the world, showcasing new films of all genres from all over the world. It was originally conceived in 1939 to compete with the Venice Film Festival, which was the only international film festival at the time. Cannes was selected as the location for the new festival because of its tourism appeal as a resort town on the French Riviera. The local government also agreed to build a dedicated venue for the event. The biggest award given out at Cannes is the Palme d’Or (“Golden Palm”) for best film. Only 4 movies have won both the Palme d’Or and the Oscar for Best Picture: “The Lost Weekend” (1945), “Marty” (1955), “Parasite” (2019), and “Anora” (2024). Learn more in the audio below.
