Open Your Eyes and Mind – 5/11/25

Ed Smith spoke with Arthur Brooks III, the Chief Operating Officer of Open Your Eyes and Mind.
-Arthur explained the mission of the organization, which is to help vulnerable children in Rochester with academic scholarships, outdoor experiences, Chrome Books and food at the holidays.
-He said the idea is to get children to open their eyes to experience different things in their lives and help them determine what they want to do after high school and college.
-They work mostly with students at Wilson High and East High School but students from all schools in the area are welcome to participate in the activities they do.
-Arthur talked about the hardship that many students in Rochester face and how important it is for them to have time to explore and play as kids.
-They are hosting Frankie Scott, the son of Wyndell Scott who was the first African American race car driver and team owner.
-Frankie Scott will be talking with students at Wilson High. The goal is to get students to open their eyes and minds to opportunities in life.
-He said they partner with the outdoor club at Wilson High School to take the kids on outdoor experiences like going to the New York State Fair.
-Arthur talked about the importance of partnerships as they work closely with Wilson High School, some local churches and local businesses who help support the organization.
-Arthur encouraged people to get involved with their upcoming 5th annual Golf Fundraising event. All of the money goes to scholarships and the activities they provide the students.
