This is the 2nd day of our theme week on Weird Roadside Attractions. Today’s roadside attraction is the 276-foot-tall, 2,400-year-old Chandelier Tree in California! The Chandelier tree is a coast redwood tree that has a 6′ wide by 7′ tall hole cut in the base to allow cars to drive through it. It stands on privately owned property in Drive-Thru Tree Park, about 180 miles north of the San Francisco Bay Area. The opening was cut in the late 1930s to create a tourist attraction for those driving along the Redwood Highway. Today, around 500 cars a day drive through the tree in the summer months. It costs $15 per car or $10 for pedestrians and motorcycles. Learn more in the audio below.
