We’re halfway through our theme week on Weird Roadside Attractions. If you find yourself driving through Connecticut, you can stop at the PEZ Visitor Center! Located next to the PEZ factory in Orange, Connecticut, the PEZ Visitor Center has over 4,000 square feet dedicated to the candy, including the largest, most comprehensive collection of PEZ memorabilia on public display in the world. You can also see the world’s largest PEZ dispenser, a PEZ motorcycle built by Orange County Choppers, and even take a peek into their production area. PEZ was first marketed as anti smoking mints in Vienna, Austria, in 1927. PEZ dispensers were created in 1948, shaped like a lighter to go with the company’s anti-smoking theme. PEZ wasn’t introduced here in America until the 1950s, but the peppermint flavor wasn’t super popular. So they added fruit flavors and introduced new packaging to appeal to children. Santa Claus, Mickey Mouse, Popeye, and Donald Duck were among the first character dispensers. Today, the PEZ factory in Connecticut produces around 12 million candies every day.
