We’re continuing our theme week Good Things That Happened in 2021! In June 2021, National Geographic announced the existence of a 5th ocean – The Southern Ocean, which encircles Antarctica. It’s the 2nd smallest of the oceans, covering around 1/16th of the Earth’s total ocean area. The ocean formed when Antarctica and South America moved apart around 30 million years ago. It has some seriously large icebergs that form every year, with enough fresh water to meet the needs of everyone on Earth for months! Learn more here.
