Today is Beer Can Appreciation Day because it was on this day in 1935 that canned beer first went on sale! The very first canned beer was manufactured by the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company, in partnership with the American Can Company. The American Can Company had unsuccessfully first tried to can beer in 1909, and then Prohibition hit. So it wasn’t until 1933 that they were able to develop a can that was pressurized and had an interior lining to keep the beer’s flavor from being ruined by a chemical reaction with the metal. Krueger Brewing made an initial test batch of 2,000 cans in 1933, which they gave to their employees and friends to try. It was a huge hit with 91% of the people who tried it. So they decided to release canned versions of their Cream Ale and Finest Beer brands. By the end of 1935, over 200 million cans of beer had been produced and sold.
