Shock and amaze your friends and family at your Super Bowl party this weekend with these interesting tidbits about the Big Game! The game was created as part of the 1966 merger between the NFL and the AFL, to have their best teams compete in a championship. It was originally known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game until 1969, with the much shorter “Super Bowl” moniker was adopted for Super Bowl III. The very first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967, between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers won 35-10. It was the only game to ever have been broadcast by 2 different networks simultaneously. And it was also the only Super Bowl that wasn’t a sellout – around 33,000 tickets went unsold. The halftime show looked a little different than what we know today, too. It featured trumpeter Al Hirt, 2 different marching bands, 300 pigeons, thousands of balloons, and a flying demonstration by the Bell Rocket Air Men. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots are tied for the most Super Bowl wins, with 6 victories each. The only teams to have never appeared in a Super Bowl are the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Houston Texans. The Super Bowl is one of the most watched sporting events in the world, with around 100 million Americans watching at any given moment. Due to the extremely high viewership, the prices of Super Bowl commercials have increased over the years. This year, NBC is charging $6.5 million per 30 second commercial. The Super Bowl is the second biggest day for food consumption in the U.S., just behind Thanksgiving. Learn more here.
