37 years ago today, the very first Blockbuster video store opened in Dallas, TX! At its peak in 2004, there were more than 9,000 Blockbuster stores worldwide. In 2000, the company turned down the opportunity to buy Netflix for $50 million. Thanks to that poor decision, poor leadership, and the Great Recession, the company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010. Today, only one Blockbuster remains open in Bend, Oregon. Learn more here.
