April 27, 2023 – Jerry Springer

More sad news today – it was announced this morning that Jerry Springer died at the age of 79. He was born in London and immigrated with his family to the U.S. when he was 4 years old. He graduated from Tulane University in 1965 with a political science degree and earned a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University in 1968. He was a political campaign advisor to Robert F. Kennedy and was mayor of Cincinnati from 1977-1978. He was hired as a political reporter and commentator on Cincinnati’s NBC affiliate, later named primary news anchor and managing editor. With help from his colleagues at the news station, he came up with his trademark catchphrase, “Take care of yourself, and each other”. He became Cincinnati’s number-one news anchor and won 10 local Emmy Awards for his nightly commentaries, which he would eventually turn into his “Final Thought” on Jerry Springer. Jerry Springer debuted on September 30, 1991, and was originally a politically-oriented talk show. It wasn’t very popular in the ratings, so it was overhauled and became the scandalous show we know it as today. It ran for over 26 years with nearly 5,000 episodes, becoming the most infamous guilty pleasure on American TV throughout the late 90s and early 2000s. The show was canceled in 2018, after which Springer hosted a courtroom show called Judge Jerry. It was canceled in 2022 after 3 seasons. Spring died at his home in Chicago after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just a few months ago. Learn more here.
