May 10, 2023 – Here Comes the Sun

“Here Comes the Sun” just became the first Beatles song to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify. Not only that, but it’s the first song from the 1960s to reach that milestone! It was written by George Harrison in the summer of 1969 at his friend Eric Clapton’s house. It was recorded and released on the band’s Abbey Road album, with “Here Comes the Sun” the first song on side 2 of the LP. It’s since appeared on many critics’ list of the Beatles best recordings. In 1977, Carl Sagan wanted to send the song to space on a record that accompanied the Voyager space mission. It was called the Voyager Golden Record and it was meant to provide any entity that found it with a representative sample of human civilization. The Beatles were all for it, but their record company, EMI owned the copyrights, and declined the offer. There are 405 other songs on Spotify’s Billions Club, and it’s estimated that “Here Comes the Sun” has generated around $4.37 million from its 1 billion Spotify streams. Learn more here.
