Happy Throwback Thursday! Today we’re featuring the year 1980. In November 1980, the Voyager 1 probe did a fly-by of Saturn, sending back the first high-resolution images of the planet, its rings, and satellites. The surface features of various moons were seen for the first time, including Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, increasing knowledge of its atmosphere. Saturn is the 6th planet from the sun and the 2nd largest in the solar system. It’s considered to be a gas giant, made up mostly of hydrogen and helium. It has at least 146 moons, but only 63 are officially named. Saturn is known for its rings, which are thought to be made up of pieces of comets, asteroids, or shattered moons that broke up in the planet’s powerful gravity. Learn more here.
