Happy Throwback Thursday! Today our throwback year is 1975, the year Famous Amos was founded! It was founded by Wally Amos, a former talent agent at the William Morris Agency. He headed up the rock ‘n roll department there and signed Simon and Garfunkel and worked with acts like The Supremes, Sam Cooke, and Dionne Warwick. Amos would often send celebrities his homemade chocolate chip cookies to entice them into meeting with him. On March 10, 1975, with $25,000 from Marvin Gaye and Helen Redding, Amos opened his first cookie store on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. He sold $300,000 worth of cookies the first year, followed by more than $1 million in sales his second year. He became a well known figure, appearing on hit shows like “The Jeffersons” and “Taxi”. By 1984, sales started to slow down and Amos started selling parts of the business. Eventually, he sold his interest in the company as an attempt to salvage the business. It sold several times and is currently owned by Ferrero. Amos tried to launch another cookie business, but was sued by his former company for trademark infringement and forbidden to use his own name and likeness. Learn more here.
