March 13, 2025 – Lynne Cox

Happy throwback Thursday! Today our throwback year is 1987. On August 7 that year, American swimmer Lynne Cox made history by becoming the first (and only) person to swim between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in the Bering Strait. She swam in 38 degree water from Little Diomede Island in Alaska to Big Diomede on the coast of the Soviet Union. It took 2 hours and 5 minutes to swim the distance of 2.7 miles. The feat has been recognized for easing the Cold War tensions between President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Gorbachev even made a toast to her later that year when he travelled to Washington to sign a nuclear weapons treaty. Learn more in the audio below.
