May 13, 2025 – Bison

If you had to guess what the most dangerous animal is at Yellowstone National Park, what would you say? A bear maybe, perhaps a poisonous snake? It’s actually bison! A Florida man found that out the hard way last week, when he became the first visitor to be attacked by a bison this year at Yellowstone. Apparently he got too close  to the animal, but luckily he escaped with only minor injuries. It turns out bison are among the most dangerous animals encountered by visitors to the various North American national parks. They will attack humans if provoked. You might think they’re slow because of their lethargic movements, but they’re actually quite fast and agile. Though they are the largest land animal in North American, bison have been observed running up to 40-45 mph! They can also jump high fences and are strong swimmers. Learn more about our national mammal in the audio below.
