May 14, 2025 – Air Force One

You may have noticed Air Force One in the news lately. Air Force One is the call sign used for any Air Force aircraft that the president of the United States is currently on. “Air Force Two” is used for aircraft carrying the Vice President. For security reasons, the President and Vice President never fly on the same plane together. The first president to fly in an aircraft while in office was Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was a bit different than what the president uses today  – it was a Douglas Dolphin amphibian modified with luxury upholstery for 4 passengers and a small separate sleeping compartment. In 1944, a C-54 Skymaster was converted for use as the first purpose-built presidential aircraft. Dubbed the “Sacred Cow”, it took Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference in 1945. The “Air Force One” call sign was created in 1954, after a plane carrying Dwight D. Eisenhower entered the same airspace as a commercial flight using the same flight number. Today, Air Force One has 4,000 square feet of space on 3 levels. It has a large office, bedroom, bathroom, and conference room that serves as an Oval Office in the sky.
