June 2, 2025 – Loretta Swit

On Friday, actress Loretta Swit died at the age of 87. She was, of course, best known for playing Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on M*A*S*H from 1972 to 1983. She took over the role from Sally Kellerman, who had portrayed Houlihan in the feature film. Swit was one of only 4 cast members to stay for all 11 seasons of the show – she appeared in all but 11 of the 256 episodes. She and Alan Alda were also the only 2 actors to appear in both the pilot and finale of the show. Swit was nominated for an Emmy Award in each of the show’s 11 seasons, winning twice in 1980 and 1982. After M*A*S*H, she guest-starred in TV shows like Bonanza, The Love Boat, and Gunsmoke. She was also a regular on gameshows, including Match Game, Pyramid, and Hollywood Squares. Learn more in the audio below.
